Central Vermont Public Service launched New England's first hybrid bucket truck in May. The truck will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 14 tons annually, a 58 percent reduction compared to a traditional diesel bucket truck. Lifetime costs are expected to be 23 percent lower than a regular bucket truck.

In 2004, FedEx Express introduced into its delivery fleet the FedEx OptiFleet E700, a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) delivery truck.

This new HEV delivery truck has been found to decrease particulate emissions by 96%, reduce smog-causing emissions (NOx and HC) by 65%, and reduce fuel consumption by over 30%.

Florida Power & Light recently announced that it was buying five new diesel hybrid utility trucks, bringing the company incrementally closer to attaining its goal of converting fully one-third of its 2900 vehicles to hybrid power by 2010.

As part of a national pilot program organized by the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF), Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and PECO Energy of Philadelphia will be among the first utilities in the nation to test two new diesel series hybrid bucket trucks.  Bucket trucks are also known as “trouble trucks”—utility work trucks with an aerial device. Both companies are units of Exelon, a $14-billion utility with a customer base of some 5 million.
