New Generation Engineering Knowledge was contracted by Eaton Corporation to develop the control system for their Diesel Electric Hybrid PowerTrain. NgEK started development on the project in late 2002 and had an early production truck running by February of 2003. In June of 2003 the system was tested at the Southwest Research Institute vehicle dyno facility and demonstrated fuel economy and emission performance better than the previous prototypes. The first Eaton Hybrid truck was delivered to FedEx in Sacramento, California in February, 2004 and is still in service there. The control algorithm went from clean sheet to the end customer is less than 18 months. The system has had no mission ending failures due to robustness or failure of the control design.
The same NgEK design has been used in various hardware configurations to support all of the trucks currently being developed by Eaton for the growing hybrid markets. The system requires almost no recalibration for the various applications and automatically adapts to maximize fuel economy in any application.
